What WE DO
Aged Care Maldives is committed to providing services to older persons to improve their quality of life and well-being.
Exercise programmes and maintenance rehabilitation
As people age, it is quite common to see a decrease in physical and mental activity leading to an increase in lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, dementia and poor mental health.
Exercise at any age is essential to maintaining good physical and mental health. At Aged Care Maldives, exercise programmes are conducted to help senior citizens maintain mobility and increase their ability to go about their daily lives.
The friendly visits
Ageing can often be a daunting task for a lot of older persons. The registered volunteer companions at Aged Care Maldives provide much needed friendship and companionship that improves mental health and self-confidence. These regular check-ins are conducted in-person or via telephone.
Home healthcare
For a majority of senior citizens, it is quite possible to live at home with some assistance from nurses or trained healthcare workers. Services provided through this programme play an important role in guaranteeing the health and mental wellbeing of older persons. These services complement the formal health system and allow partially or fully dependent senior citizens to continue living at home in good health for longer.
This service is provided through a regularly updated and personalized plan for each senior citizen. Services offered include care for the bedridden, assisted feeding, assisted bathing, tube feeding, feeding tube insertion, catheterisation, administering injections, assistance with medications and physiotherapy consultations.
Health promotion and community awareness programmes
A compassionate community is essential to healthy ageing. Aged Care Maldives is working to build such a community by engaging with media, schools, and community-based organizations.
Health screening
Aged Care Maldives’ health screenings are designed to detect early warning signs of diseases, enabling senior citizens and their families to take preventive measures to common ailments of ageing. Findings from such screenings help take necessary measures to prolong quality of life of the elderly. Aged Care Maldives provides these screenings free of charge and include weight, blood pressure and sugar monitoring as well as eyesight and dental screenings.
Outreach programmes
Aged Care Maldives conducts outreach programs to outer islands. In addition to screening programs, these outreach programs include doctor consultations conducted in partnership with hospitals and clinics of the islands where they hold these events.
Advocacy
Aged Care Maldives tries to be at the forefront of issues concerning older persons and raising its voice for the elderly in the Maldives. Aged Care Maldives continues to highlight such issues and brings them to the attention of policy makers and the public.
Some of the issues are:
- Ensuring better social and health security for the elderly
- Reducing crimes against the elderly
- Addressing negligence and abuse of the elderly
- Reducing loneliness among the elderly
- Special health and nutrition need of the older persons
Training and capacity building
It is essential that all healthcare workers are knowledgeable on ageing, and on common health issues associated with ageing. Apart from providing on the job training for healthcare workers, Aged Care Maldives conducts workshops across the country to increase the knowledge base on ageing, thus enhancing quality of aged care services in the country.
Events
Aged Care Maldives hosts regular social gatherings, including potluck events, discussion forums on selected topics, and picnics for its members. These activities aim to engage members both physically and mentally, fostering community building and camaraderie among members.
